Check auction sales in your area. We’ve had 2 businesses close recently. The sewing machines went for next to nothing.

If you live in an area where there have been ‘’sewing factories” you could put an ad in the paper. Some people buy them for their home. I never would have because I would not begin to know how to repair one if it needed it.

Unless you are a very experienced seamstress don’t try taking on an industrial sewing machine you could get hurt.
Sears sells very good machines. I have a Kenmore that I’ve made boat tarps and sewn leather with.
    Singer makes good machines too.

    Auctions and industrial machine dealers.

Note that industrials are often adjusted or are capable of only doing a single task…. it would be very rare to find an industrial machine that did both straight and zigzag stitching (commercial machines yes — industrials, not many).

Industrial machines are sometimes so specialized that there are machines for sewing lightweight fabrics only, for sewing medium weight only, etc., etc. Be sure you know exactly what you want before you buy. Besides the head, you’ll need a table and motor, unless you go for a commercial or semi-industrial. Also be aware that most require an oil bath. Some require compressed air.

A site with a number of machines for you to look through, just to get an idea of what’s out there:
