Well in this instance you cant really do much about it. You have to try to find the drivers for the device online. Use google. Basically, Windows is recognizing as a camera every time you plug it in giving it basic windows operated functionality. In order to use it to the fullest as well has alleviate the replug problem you should get those drivers from the manufacturer’s website.
The best practice for all FireWire devices (either 400 or 800) is to eject the device from MY COMPUTER before disconnecting any wires. Usually, they are NOT hot-swappable. They should always be put away before using again.
If the device is disconnected (either accidentally or deliberately) before “ejecting,” the computers resource controls still think the device is using the installed driver and it won’t ‘double up’ to use the same device with already used resources.
To protect the data on the camera, I recommend doing what you don’t want to do… restart.
You may have a POOR-connection at the PC-side/..the PORT is loose on the connection..
I have not seen a poor connection at the Camera-side..

I have a Firewire Device that uses some Duct Tape(strips)..to hold the PORT..connection in place..[end]
