An industrial process is nothing more than how an industry does something to produce it’s product. An example would be the way a coal fired power plant produces electricity. Some of the (simplified) industrial processes for that would include grinding the coal, injecting the pulverized coal into a burner, and heating water with it to run the steam turbines that turn the generators.
In addition to large amounts of fly ash and clinker as solid by-products, as much as 2.5 billion tons of carbon from coal burning may be released annually into the atmosphere according to Professor Daniel Schrag (Director, Dept. of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Harvard University http://www.eps.harvard.edu/people/faculty/schrag/ ). Mercury, Sulfur, and other environment impacting compounds are also common concerns with coal emissions.
Carbon emissions are the main focus of many global warming studies, and paleoclimatology indicates a direct link between atmospheric carbon levels and elevated global temperatures.
