   Well, they are the first to challenge Great Britain’s naval superiority. Germany begun to produced heavy battleships known as dreadnoughts. When 1st world war broke out, they produced airplanes.

   With the North German Confederation, they created a customs union. Before this, if a farmer in east Prussia wanted to sell cabbages in Bonn, he would have to ship his cabbages through 6 different countries, and pay a tariff in each one. With the customs union, the farmer would have to ship through 6 different kingdoms, but he would not pay any taxes. So trade jumped, and the German industrial Revolution took off.
