Lot of reasons that I’ve seen cited in various sources.
First, in the 1800s the U.S. built up its land-grant university system in which research and education was focused on engineering and agricultural technology, while European universities remained more focused on studying classical education. (Example, there was much work on agricultural production; and Purdue University specialized in improving boilers for train engines).
Next, in the early 1900s the U.S. adopted mass production techniques, such as Henry Ford’s mastery of automobile production, while the Europeans were more “craft producers” who were reluctant to adopt that American system.
Then, with World War II, the United States was the only industrial economy not damaged by WWII, and the US became the leader of the free world in the Cold War. The country greatly benefited by talented immigrant fleeing first the Nazis, and then the Commies.
And through it all, it must have helped that the U.S. remained one unified country (aside from the Civil War), while Europe has been fragmented and plagued by wars during most of that history.
